Take the Enjoyment Challenge to feel Happier.

One of our clients gave us a talent search assignment with screening criteria of finding students who have scored good marks across all subjects and not just 1 or 2 of their favorite ones. When asked why do they need to have good marks even in the subjects that they won't need during their job here, she asked why should I hire someone who doesn't work hard when he or she finds it boring. Any work, even software programming can get boring at times. I don't want to hire someone who only wants to do fun stuff but somebody who can have fun while doing any kind of stuff. Is that even possible, I started wondering. I started looking around at people who are really successful and are at top of their field and realized that these people have embraced everything that they need to do to be there which includes things which others may consider boring, be it an athlete exercising for fitness or a CEO analyzing MIS for performance tracking and analysis or CFO facing audits for compliance or an actor endlessly rehearing before enacting a scene. There are numerous boring tasks that accompany the interesting aspect of any job. I learned that by enjoying everything thing they do some people stay happier under most circumstances. This attitude in turn helps them to stay motivated and succeed in all of their endeavors. The following are some of the strategies that can be useful for us to start enjoying everything we need to do in our lives. 1. Focus on why that task is important: 1st step to wanting to enjoy something is to understand and acknowledge the importance of whatever it is, be it a particular subject to study or exercise for fitness or practicing a certain skill or performing a certain task at work; if we understand it's importance in our lives and for our goals, we are more likely to find ways to enjoy doing it. 2. Think and say something positive about it: 2nd step could be to start saying good things about it. We can replace our internal dialog about it from "This is so boring" to "this is so important" or "this will give me what I want" or "this is useful" or "this can be interesting once I learn it". Consciously shifting our attitude towards something can play a vital role in learning to enjoy doing it. 3. If the task is mundane, multitask: If the task is mundane and not requiring creativity and focus, like going to pick up kids from a class and waiting outside, you can easily spice it up with something interesting like singing or listening to a song or listening to jokes or speaking to a friend. The wait becomes more fun if you add some interesting activities. 4. Take recharge breaks: Important tasks that require complete focus often quickly drain our energies. Taking periodic breaks helps to recharge ourselves and keeps our interest and motivation levels high. 5. Find Humor in whatever you do: Why so serious? Blessed are those who can smile and laugh at themselves as well as their difficult circumstances. I have been following many stand up comedians on youtube and am pleasantly surprised at how they are able to create and share a very humorous perspective on any subject right from studying in college to traveling in the metro to being reprimanded by parents to even their struggle in the careers. Learn by listening to them and soon you will start seeing your life from a completely new jovial perspective as well. 6. Meet people who are passionate about it and acquire their point of view: I wasn't much interested in history until I met a historian who was very passionate about the subject. He spoke so passionately about various events in the past and its impacts on various other events, that it shifted my view of the subject as well. “It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will.” – L.M. Montgomery. Take this enjoyment challenge. Find ways to enjoy everything that you do and fill every moment of your life with happiness. Wishing you more happiness every day.
